Friend of Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/falla-matheu-manuel-de\/\">Manuel de Falla<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/angeles-ortiz-manuel\/\">Manuel \u00c1ngeles Ortiz<\/a>, among other artists from Granada who were regulars at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/el-rinconcillo\/\">El Rinconcillo.<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He was born in Seville, but the work of his father (a cook who rented and managed hotels) took him to different places, from Buenos Aires to Lisbon. He studied in Madrid and in 1917 he obtained a position as a drawing teacher at the Teacher Training College in Granada. <strong>When he arrived in Granada he brought with him a certain reputation as an artist: he had won a third medal and an engraving prize at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 1923, he took part in the historic puppet show organized at Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca&#8217;s house.\u00a0 Lanz was in charge of the puppet show, the scenery, the sets, the puppets, the flat figures for the car of the Three Wise Men&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He was quickly integrated into the cultural life of Granada. He first attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/centro-artistico\/\">Centro Art\u00edstico<\/a> where he met Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca in the presentation of his first book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/impresiones-y-paisajes\/\"><em>Impressions and Landscapes <\/em>(1918)<\/a> and soon joined the tertulia of El Rinconcillo, in the Alameda caf\u00e9. There he met the rest of the artists and intellectuals of the Granada of the Silver Age: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/soriano-lapresa-o-de-la-presa-francisco\/\">Francisco Soriano Lapresa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/barrios-fernandez-angel\/\">\u00c1ngel Barrios<\/a>, Manuel de Falla, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/angeles-ortiz-manuel\/\">Manuel \u00c1ngeles Ortiz<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/gonzalez-de-la-serna-ismael\/\">Ismael de la Serna<\/a>&#8230; Later he collaborated in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/plaza-de-los-aljibes\/\">Flamenco Song Contest (1922)<\/a> and in the launching of the magazine <em>gallo<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6026\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 810px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Hermenegildo-Lanz_titeres.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9728\" src=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Hermenegildo-Lanz_titeres.jpg\" alt=\"Puppets by Hermenegildo Lanz shown in an exhibition organized by the Diputaci\u00f3n de Granada.\" width=\"800\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Hermenegildo-Lanz_titeres.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Hermenegildo-Lanz_titeres-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Hermenegildo-Lanz_titeres-768x427.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Hermenegildo-Lanz_titeres-200x111.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Hermenegildo-Lanz_titeres-330x184.jpg 330w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Hermenegildo-Lanz_titeres-674x375.jpg 674w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Puppets by Hermenegildo Lanz shown in an exhibition organized by the Diputaci\u00f3n de Granada.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1923, he participates in the historical representation of puppets organized in Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca&#8217;s house.\u00a0 Lanz was in charge of the puppet show, the scenery, the sets, the puppets, the flat figures for the car of the Three Wise Men&#8230;\u00a0<strong>Falla valued his work and commissioned him to make the puppets and some sets for <em>Master Peter\u2019s Puppet Show<\/em><\/strong> for the performance at the palace of Princess Edmon de Polignac on June 25, 1923.\u00a0 Also, at the suggestion of Lorca, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/de-los-rios-urruti-fernando\/\">De los R\u00edos<\/a> and Manuel de Falla, he founded the Athenaeum of Science and Literature in 1925, of which he became president.<\/p>\n<p>Of his work as an engraver, the 21 woodcuts included in the collection <em>Prints of Granada<\/em> of 1926 stand out. As a set designer and lighting technician he participated in the recovery of the Auto Sacramental in the palace of Carlos V of the Alhambra in 1927.<\/p>\n<p>A perfect blend of artist and craftsman, Lanz designed posters for promoting tourism, tiles such as the one on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/carmen-de-los-mascarones\/\">Carmen de los Mascarones<\/a> by Pedro Soto de Rojas, and even designed silk and batik cloth. Commemorative plaque placed by initiative of the Ateneo de Granada, designed by Hermenegildo Lanz.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the military uprising of 1936 he is accused of being a friend of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/de-los-rios-urruti-fernando\/\">Fernando de los R\u00edos<\/a> and immediately stripped of his teaching post, suspended from his salary (which he did not recover until 1938) and <strong>subjected to a purging process that was to pursue him even after his death<\/strong>. After Falla&#8217;s mediation with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/peman-y-permartin-jose-maria\/\">Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Pem\u00e1n<\/a> so that the Regime would give him back his position, he was banished to Logro\u00f1o to a professional assignment that did not exist. In 1938, he recovered his position in Granada, but not the monthly payments withheld, and in 1940 the Tribunal of Responsibilities fined him and banned him from holding public office for five years.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A perfect blend of artist and craftsman, Lanz designed posters for promoting tourism, tiles such as the one in the Carmen de los Mascarones by Pedro Soto de Rojas and even designed silk and batik cloth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Manuel de Falla&#8217;s departure into exile in 1939 plunges him further into despondency. In 1942 he creates Totol\u00edn, a string puppet that he will turn two years later into a literary hero through collaborations with Antonio Covaleda for <em>The Literary Mail<\/em>. The assaults on his house continue. A group of students of Letters breaks into his home and takes much of the material he used for his Auto Sacramental.<\/p>\n<p>Leopoldo Torres-Balbas, who was replaced by the Regime by Prieto Moreno as architect of the Alhambra, proposes to him in 1944 collaboration in <strong>the restoration of the Alcazaba of Malaga,<\/strong> <strong>whose walls, friezes and spandrels he decorates with oil paint.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sick and aged, in 1946 he attended the funeral of Manuel de Falla in Cadiz. In May 1949, returning from one of the mandatory indoctrination courses of the Regime, Lanz had a seizure and collapses in the street.
