{"id":10774,"date":"2021-09-20T06:45:23","date_gmt":"2021-09-20T06:45:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/biography-of-federico-garcia-lorca\/from-the-university-to-madrid-1919\/"},"modified":"2021-10-08T06:58:13","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T06:58:13","slug":"from-the-university-to-madrid-1919","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/biography-of-federico-garcia-lorca\/from-the-university-to-madrid-1919\/","title":{"rendered":"From the University to Madrid (1919)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 1919, with a letter of recommendation from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/de-los-rios-urruti-fernando\/\">Fernando de los R\u00edos<\/a> in one pocket for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/jimenez-mantecon-juan-ramon\/\">Juan Ram\u00f3n Jim\u00e9nez<\/a> and another for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/jimenez-fraud-alberto\/\">Alberto Jim\u00e9nez Fraud<\/a>, director of the Residencia de Estudiantes (Student&#8217;s Residence), Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca took the plunge and moved to Madrid: &#8220;Very dear poet: There goes that boy of romantic yearnings: receive him with love, he deserves it; he is one of the young men in whom we have placed the most vivid hopes&#8221;.\u00a0To Federico, Juan Ram\u00f3n Jim\u00e9nez seemed &#8220;a very neurasthenic and entertaining man&#8221;. The host, after some time, recalled the scene as follows: &#8220;He sat pale, flat-nosed, full of moles, on my sofa and we talked about everything and everyone. He looked steadily at something, a lot of realistic moon, &#8216;a child without feet&#8217;. Moon boy, dull and a little cold.&#8221; .<\/p>\n<p>Lorca&#8217;s goal was the Residencia de Estudiantes: he needed to be admitted so that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/garcia-rodriguez-federico\/\">his father<\/a> would let him move to Madrid. As Jim\u00e9nez Fraud recalled years later, Lorca made a strong impression on him because of his appearance and character. He guaranteed him a place for October 1, 1919.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Not everything was easy for Lorca at the Residencia de Estudiantes. In addition, numerous lecturers passed through there, among them Paul Claudel, Val\u00e9ry, Max Jacob, Le Corbusier, Chesterton or Wanda Landowska. It was not all smooth sailing. Jos\u00e9 Moreno Villa remembers the obstacles that his homosexuality raised among some of his colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>In 1921, he published his second work, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/libro-de-poemas\/\"><em>Book of Poems<\/em><\/a>, a collection of 67 compositions written during his adolescence or youth that deal with the loss of childhood paradise, crisis or disenchantment. They are the poetic expression of disillusionment. The editing was also paid for by his father. In these texts the playfulness and humor of the avant-garde he met at the Residencia de Estudiantes are more manifest.
