The violence between left and right in Madrid preluded the outbreak of the Civil War. In January the first edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/bodas-de-sangre-tragedia-en-tres-actos-y-siete-cuadros\/\"><em>Blood Wedding<\/em><\/a> appears in Ediciones del \u00c1rbol, and of <em>First Songs<\/em>, in the magazine <em>H\u00e9roe<\/em> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/altolaguirre-bolin-manuel\/\">Manuel Altolaguirre<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/concha-mendez-cuesta\/\">Concha M\u00e9ndez<\/a>. He participates in the tribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/alberti-merello-rafael\/\">Rafael Alberti<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/leon-goyri-maria-teresa\/\">Mar\u00eda Teresa Le\u00f3n<\/a>, and shortly after in the tribute to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/cernuda-bidon-o-bidou-luis\/\">Luis Cernuda<\/a> and Hernando Vi\u00f1es. In May he signs the adhesion that the Popular Front dedicates to Andr\u00e9 Malraux, Jean Cassou and Henri Lenormand. In June he concludes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/yerma\/\"><em>Yerma<\/em><\/a> and writes the first act of the third comedy that was to complete the cycle of Granada chronicles, <em>The Dreams of my Cousin Aurelia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Federico defined Granada in an interview as &#8220;A land of the \u2018chavico\u2019 (alms) where the worst bourgeoisie of Spain is currently agitated&#8221;, which may have influenced his tragic end upon his return to the city.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, since the climate of violence in Madrid was increasing, as were rumors of a military coup, Federico decided, on July 13, 1936, the same day of the assassination attempt against Jos\u00e9 Calvo-Sotelo, to leave Madrid and go to Granada to celebrate his name day and that of his father at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/huerta-de-san-vicente\/\">Huerta de San Vicente (San Vicente Farmhouse)<\/a> as was customary in the family.\u00a0That day he visits the offices of <em>Cruz y Raya<\/em> where, not finding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/bergamin-gutierrez-jose\/\">Jos\u00e9 Bergam\u00edn<\/a>, he left him a note and the manuscript of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/poeta-en-nueva-york\/\"><em>Poet in New York<\/em><\/a>, which was published after his murder.<\/p>\n<p>Before leaving for his homeland, in an interview with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/bagaria-i-bou-luis\/\"> Luis Bagar\u00eda<\/a> appearing in <em>El Sol<\/em>, he made a definition of Granada that may have influenced his tragic end: &#8220;A land of the chavico (alms) where the worst bourgeoisie of Spain is currently agitated&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca was no stranger to the growing political tension that was invading Spain and that culminated in the uprising against the Republic in July 1936.
