The history of the publication began two years earlier with the founding of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/ateneo-de-granada\/\">Ateneo de Granada<\/a> by former members of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/el-rinconcillo\/\">El Rinconcillo\u00a0<\/a>tertulia. Lorca himself recounted the origin of the magazine in the words of presentation of the first issue: &#8220;With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/ruiz-carnero-constantino\/\">Constantino Ruiz Carnero<\/a> [editor of the newspaper\u00a0<em>El Defensor de Granada]<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/mora-guarnido-jose\/\">Jos\u00e9 Mora Guarnido<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/pizarro-zambrano-miguel\/\">Miguel Pizarro<\/a>, Pepe Fern\u00e1ndez-Montesinos, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/gallego-burin-antonio\/\">Antonio Gallego<\/a> [who later became the first mayor of the city in the Franco regime], <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/soriano-lapresa-o-de-la-presa-francisco\/\">Paquito Soriano<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/navarro-pardo-jose\/\">Jos\u00e9 Navarro<\/a> and others, we took long walks through the Vega and the first hills of the Sierra talking about a magazine, a newspaper expressing people\u2019s views, which would sing to the four winds this living beauty&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10013\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 660px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Constantino-Ruiz-Carnero-y-Lorca.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10013\" src=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Constantino-Ruiz-Carnero-y-Lorca.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"684\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Constantino-Ruiz-Carnero-y-Lorca.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Constantino-Ruiz-Carnero-y-Lorca-285x300.jpg 285w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Constantino-Ruiz-Carnero-y-Lorca-200x210.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Constantino-Ruiz-Carnero-y-Lorca-330x347.jpg 330w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Constantino-Ruiz-Carnero-y-Lorca-356x375.jpg 356w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca and the journalist Constantino Ruiz Carnero.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The endeavor was not easy. Federico, who rarely came to Granada, tried to incorporate in the project all his friends, not only those from Granada. He appealed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/dali-y-domenech-salvador\/\">Dal\u00ed<\/a>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/ayala-garcia-duarte-francisco\/\">Francisco Ayala<\/a>, to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/garcia-lorca-francisco\/\">his brother Francisco<\/a> (who assumed the direction), to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/bergamin-gutierrez-jose\/\">Jos\u00e9 Bergam\u00edn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/guillen-alvarez-jorge\/\">Jorge Guill\u00e9n<\/a>, who did reciprocate, and others who, although they accepted, never sent the committed text. Among them were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/falla-matheu-manuel-de\/\">Manuel de Falla<\/a>, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda de Coss\u00edo or Benjam\u00edn Jarn\u00e9s. Imaginary signatories also appeared, such as Don Alhambro, an Indian from Granada who, on his return from Guatemala, stands as a symbolic critic of the crudely traditionalist legends.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What was <em>gallo<\/em>? Federico presented it as &#8220;the Magazine of Granada, for outside Granada, a magazine that gathers the heartbeat of everywhere to better know what is its own: a living magazine, anti-localist, anti-provincial, of the world.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Between one issue and another came <em>Pavo (Turkey)<\/em>, a singular <em>anti-gallo<\/em> replica invented by <em>gallo<\/em>&#8216;s own editors who posed as reactionary creators. Although Federico gathered contributions for a third issue, it never saw the light of day.<\/p>\n<p>Why did <em>gallo<\/em> fail? The magazine, which aspired to be universal, became a localist product by including certain cutting remarks against the Granada bourgeoisie that nobody understood outside the city.<\/p>\n<p>1928 was not a good year for personal relations.
