In the days before the contest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/angeles-ortiz-manuel\/\">Manuel \u00c1ngeles Ortiz<\/a> recalls a jayullada at the Bar El Tres y Medio, in the Albaic\u00edn, with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/nina-de-los-peines-pastora-pavon-cruz\/\"> Ni\u00f1a de los Peines<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/chacon-garcia-antonio\/\">Antonio Chac\u00f3n<\/a>, La Malena, La Macarrona, <a href=\"vpersonaje\/torre-manuel-manuel-soto-lozano\/\">Manuel Torre<\/a> and the organizers, among them Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca, which ended at dawn in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/mirador-de-san-nicolas\/\">San Nicol\u00e1s Square<\/a>, the failed stage of the contest. \u00c1ngeles himself was in charge of drawing the costumes designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/zuloaga-zabaleta-ignacio\/\">Zuloaga<\/a>. Meanwhile, the selective tests of the contestants took place in the Casa de Castril.<\/p>\n<p>The Carmen de los M\u00e1rtires then the Meersmans Museum of Antiquities, was finally chosen as the venue for Zuloaga&#8217;s exhibition. The Basque painter arrived by train on May 30. Manuel de Falla Archive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On June 7, an evening was organized in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/teatrillo-del-alhambra-palace\/\">theater of the Hotel Alhambra Palace<\/a> that has gone down in history: The vice president of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/centro-artistico\/\">Centro Art\u00edstico<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/gallego-burin-antonio\/\">Antonio Gallego Bur\u00edn<\/a>, read an excerpt from the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/falla-matheu-manuel-de\/\">Manuel de Falla<\/a> on deep song; guitarist Manuel Jofr\u00e9 played a petenera and a seguiriya and Lorca read for the first time a preview of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/poema-del-cante-jondo\/\"><em>Poem of the Deep Song<\/em><\/a>, which was not published until 1931, and which included the <em>Little Ballad of the Three Rivers<\/em>. The event was capped by Andr\u00e9s Segovia, who appeared with his teacher, the guitarist Porcel, <em>Ni\u00f1o de Baza<\/em>, with some soleares. <em>El Defensor\u2019s<\/em> headline said that the evening was really Federico&#8217;s: &#8220;Granada has a poet. This boy, dreamer and in love with the beautiful and the sublime, tomorrow will be a poet&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/garcia-lorca-isabel\/\">Isabel Garc\u00eda Lorca<\/a>, who was eleven years old at the time and attended one of the auditions at the Casa de los Tiros where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/caracol-manolo-manuel-ortega-juarez\/\">Manolo Caracol<\/a> performed, remembers Federico repeating over and over again these lyrics: \u201cNo quiero comer contigo [&#8220;I don&#8217;t want to eat with you] \/ gallinas ni pavos reales; [chickens or peacocks;] \/ quiero comerme unas sopas [I want to eat some soups] \/ con persona que me iguale\u201d. The organizers, who had finally found the right chair in a catalog, recommended that women wear &#8220;the wonderful romantic costume of the 1830s and 1840s,&#8221; like the figurines of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/mariana-pineda\/\"><em>Mariana Pineda<\/em><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/dona-rosita-la-soltera-o-el-lenguaje-de-las-flores-_x000d_poema-granadino-del-novecientos-dividido-en-varios-jardines-con-escenas-de-canto-y-baile\/\"><em>Do\u00f1a Rosita the Spinster<\/em><\/a>, the poem \u201cNineteenth Century Poem by a Native of Granada&#8221; that Lorca wrote in 1935, and men Andalusian hats with the warning that top hats and formal suits were forbidden.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Zuloaga began to decorate the square late on June 12 with &#8220;luminous and colorful hangings, coppers and shawls&#8221;, and to arrange the lighting that was to give the spectator the impression of a &#8220;fire in the Alhambra&#8221;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apart from Stravinski and Ravel who, despite Falla&#8217;s insistence, were not invited due to lack of municipal budget, the list of attendees and guests from all over was extraordinary. Eduardo Molina Fajardo summarizes it: Ursula Greville, English singer; the director of the Schola Cantorum of New York, Kurt Schindler; from London came the director of the <em>Fanfare<\/em> magazine, Leigh Hennry; two old acquaintances of Falla, Maurice Legendre and the critic of <em>The Times<\/em> John B. Trend; the Dukes of Alba; writers Ram\u00f3n G\u00f3mez de la Serna, Edgar Neville and Ram\u00f3n P\u00e9rez de Ayala; musicians Fern\u00e1ndez-Arb\u00f3s and \u00d3scar Espl\u00e1, plus old and young singers guitarists, dancers, journalists and, of course, fans, some experienced and others novices. The jury was also ready: Antonio Chac\u00f3n and Andr\u00e9s Segovia; Antonio Ortega and Gallego Bur\u00edn (Centro Art\u00edstico), Amalio Cuenca, Gregorio Abril and Jos\u00e9 L\u00f3pez Ruiz.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, when the ominous sector realized that the contest was unstoppable, they made a wish: That the Plaza de los Aljibes would sink!
