{"id":9289,"date":"2018-12-03T11:57:59","date_gmt":"2018-12-03T11:57:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/lugar\/hermitage-of-the-archangel-saint-michael-alto\/"},"modified":"2022-01-27T10:58:39","modified_gmt":"2022-01-27T10:58:39","slug":"hermitage-of-the-archangel-saint-michael-alto","status":"publish","type":"lugar","link":"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/hermitage-of-the-archangel-saint-michael-alto\/","title":{"rendered":"San Miguel Arc\u00e1ngel Hermitage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Hermitage of the Archangel St. Michael (Ermita del Arc\u00e1ngel San Miguel), like so many Christian buildings, was raised in 1673 by Archbishop Diego Escolano on an ancient Arab tower called Del Aceituno that closed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turgranada.es\/en\/fichas\/walls-of-the-albaicin-16771\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nasrid wall of Granada<\/a>. Next to it there was a fountain and a &#8220;prodigious&#8221; and tireless olive tree, celebrated by the Arab authors, which bore fruit and ripened every day.<\/p>\n<p>The original church was enlarged in 1753 but was destroyed during the French occupation in 1812. It was then rebuilt by the Archbishopric in different phases, the last in 1883.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The archangel is taken out on the Sunday following September 29 in a very popular picturesque pilgrimage. At the back and side of the hermitage begin the ravines that flow into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turgranada.es\/en\/fichas\/sacromonte-quarter-48787\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sacromonte<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Its connection with Lorca, however, is based on the androgynous statue of the archangel Saint Michael that is kept in its chapel and to which Lorca dedicated one of his best-known poems of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/primer-romancero-gitano-1924-1927-en-cubierta-romancero-gitano\/\"><em>Gypsy Ballads<\/em><\/a> written during the summer of 1926 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/hotel-espana-de-lanjaron\/\">in Lanjar\u00f3n<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/huerta-de-san-vicente\/\">Huerta de San Vicente (San Vicente Farmhouse)<\/a>. In a way, it is the antithesis of the procession of the Virgen de las Angustias, patron saint of the city, which parades on the last Sunday of September.
