{"id":9074,"date":"2021-08-31T09:43:55","date_gmt":"2021-08-31T09:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/lugar\/mariana-pineda-square\/"},"modified":"2021-10-02T19:12:09","modified_gmt":"2021-10-02T19:12:09","slug":"mariana-pineda-square","status":"publish","type":"lugar","link":"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/mariana-pineda-square\/","title":{"rendered":"Mariana Pineda Square"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/mariana-pineda\/\">Mariana Pineda<\/a> Square (emblematic heroine of the liberal and romantic Granada) is the central location of the tragic history of this native of Granada.<\/p>\n<p>It was located a few steps from the Lorca family home in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/casa-acera-del-casino-31\/\">Acera del Casino<\/a>. In fact the poet used to witness the daily comings and goings of the square from his room. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/mora-guarnido-jose\/\">Mora Guarnido<\/a> describes the place as &#8220;A common square, the most commonplace of the small squares in Granada without perspective and without grace and in the center a bad marble statue that pretends to represent the poor Marianita in the figure of a fat Roman matron&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8592\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 610px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/g07_old_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8592 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/g07_old_01.jpg\" alt=\"Image from the time of the authentic Mariana Pineda.\" width=\"600\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/g07_old_01.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/g07_old_01-300x233.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/g07_old_01-200x155.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/g07_old_01-330x256.jpg 330w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/g07_old_01-484x375.jpg 484w, https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/g07_old_01-581x450.jpg 581w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">Image of Mariana Pineda\u2019s time.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The construction of the esplanade was approved by the Cortes in 1836 (during the Regency of Mar\u00eda Cristina). The execution was however slow. The first stone was laid in 1839, although the inauguration was delayed until 1873. The authors of the sculpture were Miguel Mar\u00edn and Francisco Morales. The full-length figure represents a Mariana dressed in a tunic, her hair loose and her right hand resting on a column covered by a flag, in whose folds one can read &#8220;Homeland \/ Law \/ Liberty&#8221;. Her left hand is placed under a cross hanging from her neck towards her chest. Mariana directs her gaze with a look of dismay towards the site of the no-longer existing Cervantes Theater.
