{"id":9051,"date":"2021-08-31T09:43:44","date_gmt":"2021-08-31T09:43:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/lugar\/performing-arts-center\/"},"modified":"2021-10-04T11:47:38","modified_gmt":"2021-10-04T11:47:38","slug":"performing-arts-center","status":"publish","type":"lugar","link":"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/performing-arts-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Centro Art\u00edstico"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Artistic, Literary and Scientific Center of Granada (Centro Art\u00edstico de Granada), a centennial cultural institution, was founded in April 1885 and plays a very important role in the cultural life of the city, especially in the first two decades of the last century. In its formation, the intellectual elite linked to Freemasonry was of great help. Its first board of directors was presided over by Vicente Arteaga and Manuel G\u00f3mez-Moreno was the vice-president. The founding headquarters was at Plaza Nueva, 20. In its long history, the institution experienced numerous vicissitudes and changes of address.<\/p>\n<p>Although it has tended to represent the most conservative spirit in the face of the drive of the new generations of creators, it also welcomed the new values to address the even more traditionalist character of the Granada High School. Its first stage of glory was between 1889 and 1890, and ended around 1898 when the board proceeded to its temporary closure.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lorca joined the institution as an aspiring musician.\u00a0A year later, in 1918, Federico read in its premises some of the chapters of &#8216;<em>Impressions and Landscapes&#8217;<\/em>, his first book. However, his relationship with the Center was strained until the definitive rupture to found the Athenaeum in 1925.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Its second period of glory began in 1908 with the re-founding of the entity by a group of members led by Francisco de Paula Valladar who was seconded by others such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/barrios-fernandez-angel\/\">\u00c1ngel Barrios<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/ruiz-carnero-constantino\/\">Constantino Ruiz Carnero<\/a> and Eugenio G\u00f3mez Mir. The discrepancies however were immediate. Ruiz Carnero and his group of republican liberals marked the distances that same year. Despite the continuous divergences, the sculptor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/gonzalez-quesada-juan-cristobal\/\">Juan Crist\u00f3bal<\/a> made his debut at the Center (in 1913, at the age of 15); <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/angeles-ortiz-manuel\/\"> as did Manuel \u00c1ngeles Ortiz<\/a>, who exhibited in 1913 and 1915, Ram\u00f3n Carazo and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/gonzalez-de-la-serna-ismael\/\">Ismael Gonz\u00e1lez de la Serna<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the record book of the Centro Art\u00edstico, Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca joined as a member on February 11, 1915 at the age of 17, and remained an active member until January 1, 1924. Those were the times when he punctually attended the classes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/segura-mesa-antonio\/\">Antonio Segura Mesa<\/a> in the street <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/casa-de-antonio-segura\/\">Escudo del Carmen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to some accounts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/de-los-rios-urruti-fernando\/\">Fernando de los R\u00edos<\/a>, president of the Center, met Lorca while playing a Beethoven sonata on the institution&#8217;s piano. But he soon turned to literature. In fact, his first creative text, entitled <em>Fantas\u00eda Simb\u00f3lica<\/em>, appeared in the bulletin that the center published in 1917 dedicated to Jos\u00e9 Zorrilla.<\/p>\n<p>A year later, in 1918, Federico read in its premises some of the chapters of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/impresiones-y-paisajes\/\"><em>Impressions and Landscapes<\/em><\/a>, his first book. &#8220;It was a local center of culture that sheltered all the creative movement of Granada. Nothing absolutely eminent, but certainly not negligible,&#8221; describes Francisco Garc\u00eda Lorca.<\/p>\n<p>The Centro Art\u00edstico was also the organizer of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/plaza-de-los-aljibes\/\">Flamenco Song Contest<\/a> of 1922, although not without controversy, and organized numerous concerts in the Carlos V palace, which eventually came together in the Festival of Music and Dance.
