{"id":8830,"date":"2019-01-11T07:34:58","date_gmt":"2019-01-11T07:34:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/lugar\/sanctuary-of-the-christ-of-the-cloth-of-moclin\/"},"modified":"2021-11-19T10:11:09","modified_gmt":"2021-11-19T10:11:09","slug":"sanctuary-of-the-christ-of-the-cristo-del-pano","status":"publish","type":"lugar","link":"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/lugar\/sanctuary-of-the-christ-of-the-cristo-del-pano\/","title":{"rendered":"Sanctuary of the Cristo del Pa\u00f1o of Mocl\u00edn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The church of the Encarnaci\u00f3n in Mocl\u00edn, where the shrine of Cristo del Pa\u00f1o is located, is linked to a major work by Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/yerma\/\"><em>Yerma<\/em><\/a>, and to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/obra-literaria\/la-romeria-de-los-cornudos\/\"><em>The pilgrimage of the cuckolds<\/em><\/a>, a ballet by Gustavo Pittaluga based on a verbal argument by Lorca and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/rivas-the-cherif-cipriano\/\">Cipriano Rivas Cherif<\/a> which was premiered on 9 November 1933 at the Teatro Calder\u00f3n in Madrid by the company of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universolorca.com\/en\/personaje\/lopez-julvez-encarnacion-la-argentinita\/\">Encarnaci\u00f3n L\u00f3pez J\u00falvez, <em>La Argentinita<\/em><\/a>, music by Gustavo Pittaluga and set by Alberto S\u00e1nchez.<\/p>\n<p>The church, like all the old churches of the diocese of Granada, was founded in 1501 after the conquest of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs. It was built on the site of an ancient mosque. Construction began in 1505, although the design of the main chapel, attributed to Diego de Silo\u00e9, had to wait until 1543.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The name of the Christ comes from one of its healing specialties: eye cataract, also called &#8216;pa\u00f1o&#8217; (cloth) disease in Spanish.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The building underwent several vicissitudes so that its current appearance is contemporary and dates back to 1940. The name of the Christ comes from one of its healing specialties: eye cataract, also called &#8216;pa\u00f1o&#8217; (cloth) disease in Spanish.
