The first statue placed in Granada city dedicated to Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca, almost seventy years after his assassination, is installed in the boulevard of the Avenida de la Constituci\u00f3n and is part of a series of ten sculptures dedicated to historical figures of Granada.<\/p>\n

The figure of Lorca, of real proportions, is the work of the artist Jos\u00e9 Antonio Corredor and shows the poet sitting on a bench, with his legs crossed, his hands intertwined and his gaze straight ahead.<\/p>\n

The choice of Lorca and the rest of those honored in the sculptures was made by popular vote.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The writer’s violent death and the family’s reluctance to authorize a tribute during Franco’s dictatorship delayed the placement in the capital of any monument recognizing the leading writer born in Granada in the 20th century. The first monument to Federico in the province after the dictatorship was placed in Fuente Vaqueros<\/a> on June 5, 1980 and is the work of Cayetano An\u00edbal.<\/p>\n

The thorough renovation of the Avenida de la Constituci\u00f3n boulevard, undertaken by the Granada City Council starting in 2008, ended in 2010 with the opening of a permanent exhibition of sculptures dedicated to the personalities of Granada. The choice of the honorees was made by popular vote. Along with Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca other statues were placed for Eugenia de Montijo, San Juan de la Cruz, Elena Mart\u00edn Vivaldi, Manuel de Falla<\/a>, Manuel Ben\u00edtez Carrasco, Pedro Antonio de Alarc\u00f3n, Salvador S\u00e1nchez, Frascuelo<\/em>, Mar\u00eda la Canastera and Gonzalo Fern\u00e1ndez de C\u00f3rdoba, The Great Captain<\/em>. The authors are, in addition to the aforementioned Broker, Miguel Moreno Romera, Jos\u00e9 Antonio Castro, Miguel Barranco and Ramiro Meg\u00edas.<\/p>\n

The sculptures of the Avenida de la Constituci\u00f3n, as well as others installed in different parts of the city, were paid for with contributions from the builders of Granada.<\/p>\n

In January 2012, one of the feet of the sculpture of Lorca had to be replaced after the original one was amputated.
